How to use Copilot Plus mode.

Copilot Plus enhances your Obsidian experience with advanced AI tools for more powerful personal knowledge management. Key differentiating features include:

  • Advanced Vault Search with time-based queries for precision
  • Contextual Chat for richer context, more informed conversations
  • Project Mode for focused work across 50+ file types
  • Composer for editing notes directly within chat
  • Autocomplete for quicker writing

You can use all core free features in Copilot Plus mode, plus additional premium features.

Easy Guide to Use Copilot Plus

Copilot Plus API Key Setup: To enable Copilot Plus features, you need to apply your license key.

  1. Obtain your Copilot Plus license key from your dashboard at https://www.obsidiancopilot.com/en/dashboard.

  2. Open Copilot Settings in Obsidian.

  3. Navigate to Basic Settings → Plus License field.

  4. Paste and apply your license key into the Plus License field.

  5. By default,  now you can use

    • Chat model: copilot-plus-flash (Gemini Flash with one context window, subject to change based on the best available model)
    • Embedding model:

      • copilot-plus-small as the default for most general use cases

      • multilingual for multiple languages

      • copilot-plus-large (Believer Plan only) for complex content like legal or math requiring advanced reasoning Note: If you prefer to use a different AI model, please set up the AI model API key separately. Setup your AI model's API key here.

Time-Based Queries for Vault Search

Time-based queries in vault search allows time-based queries using either the modified date or titles formatted as yyyy-mm-dd titles for efficient note filtering and searching.

Multimodal Support for Enriched Chat Context

Copilot Plus chat enables the integration and understanding of multiple types of context to enrich your chat experiences.

  • Context types support: markdown, PDF, image, youtube, URL.
    • Markdown: Use [[<note>]] in the chat, same as Chat Mode.
    • Youtube: Use Copilot Plus tool @youtube to quickly summarize a YouTube video from its URL by extracting transcriptions, letting you grasp key points without watching the full content. Context Youtube
    • URL: Drop a URL into the chat to quickly summarize and get insights from the given web content from its URL, speeding up your online research. Context URL
    • Web: Use Copilot Plus tool @websearch for real-time web search in the chat, especially useful when you need a quick updated answer from the internet. Context Web Search
    • PDF: Click +Add context button above the chat, when you want to enrich your context from PDFs. Context PDF
    • Image: Drag image into your chat or click image button in the bottom right corner of your chat box, when you want to enrich your context from images. Context Image

Tips for Effective Use of Copilot Plus

The Copilot Plus toolkit allows intentional use of agentic tools to accomplish tasks. Type @ in your chat to launch Copilot tool palette.

  • @vault: Provides access to enhanced vault-related functions, more powerful than Vault QA (Basic)
  • @youtube: Use prompt plus Youtube video URL to get quick insights and ask follow-up questions about the content.
  • @websearch: Use web search for gathering real-time information from the internet.
  • @composer: Use composer to edit notes directly within chat—organizing content, applying tags, highlighting key details, and cleaning up irrelevant info.
  • URL: URLs can be used as context for reference directly in your chat.
  • PDF as context: Use Add context button to add a PDF context.
  • Image context: Drag images into your chat as context if your AI model supports vision features enabled in settings.

Copilot Plus Models

  1. Default Chat Model: copilot-plus-flash Gemini Flash, also known as copilot-plus-flash, is a Frontier chat model included at no extra cost with the Copilot Plus paid plan. It offers fast and efficient AI interactions, making it a great choice for users who want responsive and capable assistance without additional fees.
  2. How to choose a model to fulfill my needs? Copilot Plus supports a wide range of AI models to suit different user needs:
    • Frontier chat models: You can use any Frontier AI chat model, including Gemini Flash, which is included by default.
    • OpenAI-compatible embedding models: The paid plan includes three models:
      • copilot-plus-small (default)
      • copilot-plus-multilingual (for diverse language support)
      • copilot-plus-large (available with the Believer plan only) Subscribers can also add any Frontier embedding models or custom models to tailor the AI's capabilities to their specific needs. Consider your priorities such as speed, language support, or advanced reasoning when selecting a model.

Tip: If I were to choose a favorite AI model within Copilot Plus, I would recommend starting with Gemini Flash for its balance of speed and performance included at no extra cost. For more specialized tasks, exploring the OpenAI-compatible models like copilot-plus-multilingual or copilot-plus-large can provide enhanced capabilities. Ultimately, the best model depends on your unique use case and preferences, and Copilot Plus's flexibility allows you to experiment and find the perfect fit.
